Chapter Nine

Czion stared down at the man fate had bonded him to. Jaxon slept sprawled out on his stomach, face buried in Remi’s luxurious pillows. Remi had called in a healer to clean and dress their mate’s wounds. Despite stirring a few times, and some painful moans, Jax had yet to open his eyes. The worst five hours of Czion’s life, and he hated it.

He’d never known fear like he’d experienced when he’d spied Jax on the floor, bleeding profusely. It took all he had to calm the jaguar and take care of Remi without losing his mind. His fault. If he’d just taken the time to appreciate the gift fate had given him, he wouldn’t be here now, praying that Jax would open his eyes.

He’d been appointed to watch over Jax while Remi went off for a closed door meeting with the other members of the Council. Czion didn’t like it, but at least Prez and Saint were with her. Just before Remi walked out the door, she’d asked him to think about what losing Jax would mean for them, their bond.

Czion had so many questions. Like, why would he be bonded to a man when he’d never been attracted to men? Was he a latent lover of men, and the person to unlock that part of him had to be his bonded male? His animal had no qualms about wanting to get closer to the skin walker, wanting to rub all over him, scent mark him. But Czion had to do the thinking for them both.

He stared at Jax. The male’s dark brown skin was pale, pain making his sharp cheekbones more pronounced. He was a good looking man, sure, Czion could acknowledge that. Jax’s hair was short, his nose sharp and his lips firm looking. There’d been a moment back at the hotel when Remi had kissed Czion then Jax, that Czion had wanted to do the same. He’d wanted to grab Jax and kiss him, suck on the lips Remi had made wet. Czion had had to sink his claws into his palm to keep from acting on the lust, and his animal had rebelled. The jaguar accepted it without reservation.

Why can’t I?

His reticence put all three of them in danger. Remi was right. This was all his fault. Had they cemented their bond, they’d have known when Jax was in danger. They’d have been able to stop it.

The jaguar whined and Czion shuffled his feet against the soft carpeting. Remi’s bedroom was huge and spacious, airy and painted white and dove gray. He’d been inside this very bedroom, once. He knew how comfortable the bed was. He and Remi had spent hours fucking there. He knew the free floating tub in the equally spacious bathroom could fit three people with ease.

So many things he knew, there were even more he didn’t. He’d thought walking away from Remi would have been the best thing. He’d rejected one mate and ended up with two. Two hearts to break.
